What is a co-own?

A co-own partnership is a practical way to ensure a puppy gets the individual attention they deserve while remaining a part of a high-quality breeding program. In this setup, you get to raise your puppy no different than any other family, meaning they live in your home as your personal companion. To keep things simple and transparent, the breeder will pay for all breeding related expenses, while you handle the typical costs of owning a pet, like food and routine vet visits.

Once a dog is determined to be of breeding quality, they will remain intact until the end of their breeding career, at which point they will be spayed or neutered. This partnership is vital for a responsible program because it allows us to evaluate and preserve the best traits of the McNab Shepherd without relying on a kennel environment.

When we evaluate a dog for breeding, we look for specific qualities that define the breed—specifically, a dog who can "do it all," whether that is competitive sports, stock work, or being an active family companion. Key traits we look for include:

  • Structure: Physically sound and built for the endurance required of a working dog.
  • Health: Passing all genetic and orthopedic screenings to ensure a long, healthy life.
  • Intelligence & Workability: The sharp mind and natural instinct needed to solve problems on the move.
  • Biddability & Drive: A strong desire to work in partnership with their human and the intensity to get the job done.

There are several benefits to joining a co-own partnership, including the breeder's full support and mentorship throughout the dog's life. Additionally, as a thank you for being a part of our program’s success, owners will receive a free puppy from a litter their co-owned dog produces. By choosing to co-own, you play a direct role in producing healthy, capable puppies while knowing your dog is living their best life as a beloved member of your family.
